Signed Items

Waiting for signatures used to be sort of exciting, but now I am over the thrill of having a famous person's autograph. I have spent hours in lines or in wait, from bearing the cold in 2000 to meet Ben Harper or waiting in line for hours at Orioles Fan Fest to obtain Rafael Palmeiro's signature, only to arrive at the beginning of the line as Rafael took off. Click on the following signatures to open a new window with the full signed item:

Frank Cho
On June 9, 2001, Andy and I went to a comic book store in Virginia for an event featuring two collaborators with University of Maryland roots. Artist Frank Cho, of the comic strip Liberty Meadows, attended a University of Maryland campus in Baltimore. Tiffany Taylor attended the main College Park campus. Cho had a drawing of Taylor that was for sale, and they often did events together. There was a good turnout at the comic book store but we didn't have to wait long before meeting the pair. Frank Cho signed a random comic book of his that I purchased. Tiffany Taylor signed a Playboy signature card (she was the November 1998 playmate). Andy dragged me to the event because he wanted to meet Frank Cho. These events clearly make money off random attendees as I purchased two items I had no intention of ever buying (simply because I wanted something signed). Note: Tiffany Taylor's full signature is "not safe for work."

Scott Kurtz
On September 6, 2002, I helped my friend Andy man a table at the 2002 Small Press Expo in Bethesda, Maryland. Our table, where I promoted Andy's comic On Campus, was located next to a table featuring two well-known comic artists, Frank Cho (see above) and Scott Kurtz. Kurtz, author of PvP, was a really friendly guy and we chatted throughout the expo. When Cho and Kurtz went to speak at a seminar, Andy and I watched their table. Appreciating our kindness (we were delighted to watch the table as we were the spokesmen for one of the most popular tables at the show), Cho gave both of us a book of his art and Kurtz gave me his first book. I showed Kurtz my favorite panel from the book and he graciously sketched me the particularly hilarious panel, which is how I got his signature (and a great sketch).

Ben Harper
During the height of my obsession with Ben Harper, I saw the band eleven times in a one-year period. I stayed after shows three separate times to meet the band. The first time I met the band was after the November 10, 2000 show at the Landmark Theater in Richmond, Virginia. That same day I had received in the mail the "Faded" twelve-inch vinyl record that I had ordered. I took it down and after the show I waited out in the cold for the band, making some friends while waiting. Finally I met Ben Harper, Juan Nelson, David Leach, and Dean Butterworth, all of whom signed my twelve-inch. I was particularly delighted that Juan Nelson signed as "Bassman" because I was obsessed with his bass solos and was pleased that I had heard his ultimate solo on "Fight For Your Mind" that night.

Zack de la Rocha
Rage Against The Machine's "The Battle Of Los Angeles" came out on November 2, 1999. At midnight of that day the band held a signing at a Tower Records in Washington, DC. I went with friends Andrés and Harold. Fortunately we ran into another friend, Loryn, who let us join her in line, saving us from walking a block or two to the end of the line. (This was at the peak of RATM's popularity so there were a ridiculous number of people in line.) Once I got inside I obliged and purchased the new CD. The organizers had the event timed perfectly so each person was allotted only a brief moment with the band. Thinking back, the highlight of the night wasn't receiving the four signatures but instead was the fun of waiting in line with friends way into the at night.

Marc Broussard
After his (unfortunately) poorly attended show at the Recher Theatre, Marc Broussard was hanging out and chatting with the audience. I was at the show with Sena and Esther and I convinced them to get his signature for me (as well as for themselves). This signature is therefore the weakest of all the ones on this page because I was too bashful to get it myself.
